Main causes of internal house leaks in order of frequency
Dux Quest
If your house was built or renovated in the late 70s/early-mid 80s, you have a greater than even chance that your biggest asset has a dormant menace within the walls. Estimates range from 30,000-50,000 houses containing Dux Quest. Dux Quest is a leak menace. We have repiped entire houses because of persistent Dux Quest leaks. Most insurance companies only insure for the first Dux Quest leak, so be warned.
Fatigued pipe
Pipe that has been pulled through a hole that is too tight. Pipe that has been over-bent. Pipe that is incorrectly clipped (or not clipped) and is rubbing against something else such as an abrasive surface, another pipe or subfloor timber. This can wear away over time with the micro-movements as water starts and stops flowing through the pipe. Hot pipes slightly expand and contract adding to the wear.
Rodent action
Winter is usually the time that rodents become a mischief, they will gnaw through your plastic pipes for an explosive shower, or a drink of water.
Pinhole leaks in copper
Over time water will find a weak point in your copper pipe and will start to wear it down. This can take many years, but water will wear away copper piping. If you can’t see it you can sometimes hear it
DIY mishaps
Sabre saw through piping, nail or drilling through piping are the normal ones we have seen.
Incorrect crimp
This does not happen often, because an incorrect crimp will often show up immediately, however, they can sometimes hang on for a while before a leak forms.
