How do I stop my house from flooding?

With the recent rain many NZ houses have been submerged by a stormwater system that has been overloaded.

Over the years of increasing urbanisation, the ground that would normally soak up plenty of water has been covered with houses, other buildings and asphalt. These mediums direct the flow of water into, usually, the storm water system.

The question is, has Auckland infrastructure been upgraded to keep up with all this extra water being directed into the pipes under Aucklands streets? Not to mention the apparent increases in rain, in the past years, is there a option to stop flooding.

One way that Auckland has tried to reduce the strain on the stormwater system is the installation of detention tanks. These tanks act as a buffer to the water coming from your roof etc into the system. The outlet on the tanks chokes the rate the tank can empty, therefore reducing the stress on the system. Installation of pre-emptive detention tanks could reduce the stress on the system where you live, and reduce the possibility of flooding.

A reason not related to Auckland’s infrastructure problems, and the extra rain, is root impingement into your stormwater outlet pipes. Roots blocking, or partially blocking your pipes can result in a back up and eventual flood.

A good way to check if they are blocked is to have them surveyed by CCTV. With CCTV we can record all of your stormwater pipes and sewer pipes if you would like. These surveys can identify issues such as cracks, displaced pipes, blockages and root impingements. With our state of the art equipment we can locate these pipes, then effect the most expeditious and economical solutions to the issue.
