How to clean your waste disposal unit

Over the years, or sometimes months, grease, food matter and other wonderful things can accumulate in the grinding chamber and inlet baffle. These remains can cause extremely unpleasant odours, therefore the best option is to give your waste disposal a clean every year, or when the pungent stench gets just too much for you.

Here are the cleaning steps.

  1. Turn off the power to your disposal unit

  2. Double check that the power is off as you will be reaching your hand into the grinding chamber

  3. With rubber gloves, reach through the sink opening to pull out the inlet baffle. If the inlet baffle is not easily removed, do not force it out. You will have to clean in-situ.

  4. Clean the underside of the inlet baffle

  5. Replace the inlet baffle

  6. Restore power to your waste disposal unit

  7. Place the plug over the waste disposal and fill the sink about half way with warm to hot water (remember you need to put your hand in there, so be careful with the temperature)

  8. Mix 60 to 100ml of baking soda in the water and allow it to dissolve.

  9. Once the baking soda has dissolved, switch on the waste disposal and pull the plug.

  10. Switch the waste disposal off just before all the water has drained.

  11. Now you have a clean waste disposal, ready for another year of stench-free usage
