Everything you need to know about gas califonts
What is a gas califont?
A gas califont is an on-demand water heater. Instead of utilising a tank to store and heat water, the califont heats the water by gas as you require it. A gas califont can also be called an instantaneous water heater, tankless water heater, or continuous flow water heater to name a few.
How does the califont work?
A califont is not a simple piece of kit; when compared to a hot water cylinder, it is like comparing a Model T Ford with a Tesla.
The basic operation is that a gas-powered heating unit heats cold water on demand.
The more in depth overview is that the electronic control unit (ECU) recognises a draw of water through the flow sensor. It controls the fan and burner to heat the water. A couple of thermostats control the amount of heat required thereby controlling the water temperature to a prescribed value.
what do i need for an installation
There are certain rules as to where a califont can be installed. Talk to one of our team to find the perfect location.
There are internal and external califont options, each have their positives and negatives.
Generally they take up much less space than a hot water cylinder.
You need a source of gas, which can either be natural gas from the street or LPG bottles.

Gas califont installation regulation NZ
Regulations state that all gas connections require a qualified gas fitter to undertake this work. On completion of the work you will require a Certificate of Compliance and a Gas Safety Certificate.
Will my gas califont work when the power is out?
Unfortunately your gas califont will require power to make the ECU work and in turn ignite the gas. So you will only have cold water during a power outage.
