Why is my sink draining slowly?

When you pull the plug and the water just sits there, gradually draining away, there’s a plumbing issue that needs to be resolved:

  1. Clogged pipe: The most common cause of a slow-draining sink is a clogged pipe. Hair, soap residue, and food particles can all accumulate in the drain and create a blockage. It’s common with certain types of plugs which trap materials more readily. Depending on your plumbing configuration, the pipe may be blocked further down by something else. I.e. a blocked sink might be caused by issues that began in the washing machine (in which case you may also notice issues with the washing machine).

  2. U-bend blockage: The u-bend is a curved pipe located under the sink that traps debris and prevents sewer gases from entering your home. If it becomes clogged, it can cause slow drainage. It can happen if your waste disposal hasn’t ground up food items sufficiently, or if you’ve poured hot fat down your drain which has solidified, or if you have rinsed food particles down the plughole which have accumulated.

  3. Venting issues: The drainpipe needs air to function properly, and if the venting system is clogged or damaged, it can cause slow drainage and a noisy drain.

  4. Pipe corrosion or damage: Pipes can become damaged due to a build-up of corrosion, or general wear and tear, which can cause slow drainage.

  5. Improper Installation: If the sink was not installed correctly, it can cause drainage problems. A pipe may not have enough fall angle on it, and water is not draining away fast enough.
