How much does it cost to upgrade from a hot water cylinder to an instantaneous hot water heater (califont)?
The answer depends on a few of the following questions.
Do you already have a gas supply on site, or will you want to use LPG?
On-site gas supply makes the job a little easier as we don’t have to find a place to comply with storing LPG bottles. It may require an upgrade to your existing gas pipework.
How easy is it to get to your water feed?
If you live in a villa or a type of house you can get under, this is usually the easiest setup to divert water to and from califont. Houses on a concrete slab are harder, but not impossible. We may be able to divert pipes from the ceiling space.
How many people will be in the house using hot water?
More people in the house means a higher spec califont will be required to give enough hot water flow.
Is there a place on your outside wall that complies with the code to hang a califont?
Finding a place to house a califont and LPG bottles usually are no issue, but you have to be careful with placement away from doors, windows, air vents, under house vents, gully traps and storm water inlets.
Is a power source easy to connect to?
An electrician will be required to provide a waterproof plug for your califont.
Were you on a low pressure system previously?
Your shower and taps may operate differently after a change to mains pressure hot water. It is something to consider.
Are you worried about hot water during power cuts?
A hot water cylinder will stay hot for a fair amount of time with no power, but a califont will not function without power.
So, what’s the cost to install a gas califont?
As a round figure, an upgrade to a califont can cost somewhere between $2000 and $3500 depending on the combination of all these factors.
